Pokémon binder sizes: 9-pocket vs 12-pocket, and what each holds
A 20-page 9-pocket binder holds 360 cards, a 12-pocket one 480, a 4-pocket one 160. How capacity is counted, what sleeves cost in space, and pages per set.
A zip binder with 20 two-sided pages of 9 pockets holds 360 standard-size cards, one card in each pocket on each side of each page. The same binder with 12 pockets a page holds 480, and a 4-pocket one holds 160. Those are the capacities Vault X, Ultra PRO and BCW state for their main 20-page zip binders (one Ultra PRO line states half, as the next section shows), and the arithmetic behind them is simple: pockets per page, times two sides, times the number of pages.
Every set this guide checks fits in one 360-card binder, one card of each number: 151's 207 cards take 23 page sides, a little over half of the 40 sides such a binder has. The rest of this guide sets out each format the manufacturers list, how sleeves change what fits, the difference between zip binders and ring binders, and how many pages ten recent sets take.
What each size holds
Every figure in this table is the manufacturer's own, read on its product page on October 14, 2026. "Pages" means two-sided pages, so each holds twice its pocket count:
| Format | Pages | Stated capacity | Examples |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4-pocket zip binder | 20 | 160 cards | Vault X 4-Pocket Exo-Tec Zip Binder |
| 9-pocket zip binder | 20 | 360 cards | Vault X 9-Pocket Exo-Tec Zip Binder; Ultra PRO Vivid 9-Pocket Zippered PRO-Binder; BCW Z-Folio 9-Pocket Album |
| 12-pocket zip binder | 20 | 480 cards | Vault X 12-Pocket Exo-Tec Zip Binder; Ultra PRO Vivid 12-Pocket Zippered PRO-Binder |
| 12-pocket zip binder, XL | 26 | 624 cards | Vault X 12-Pocket Exo-Tec Zip Binder XL |
| 16-pocket zip binder, XXL | 34 | 1,088 cards | Vault X 16-Pocket Exo-Tec Zip Binder XXL |
All of these have side-loading pockets: the card goes in from the side of the pocket, not the top. Vault X gives the inside of its standard pocket as 68 by 97 mm. A standard card is 63 by 88 mm (2½ by 3½ inches) in Dragon Shield's size guide, and Ultra PRO sizes its Pokémon sleeves for standard 2.5 by 3.5 inch cards, so a Pokémon card in an ordinary sleeve fits the pocket with room to spare.
Two products in the same family state different numbers for what reads as the same layout. Ultra PRO's Vivid 9-Pocket Zippered PRO-Binder says 20 pages and up to 360 cards, while its 9-Pocket Zippered Premium PRO-Binder says 20 pages of 9 pockets and up to 180 cards, which is one card per pocket on one side only. Read the stated capacity of the exact product rather than assuming it from the pocket count.
The 12-pocket page puts four cards in each of three rows, where the 9-pocket page has three rows of three. Ultra PRO describes each row of its 12-pocket page as holding a four-card playset.
How sleeves change the count
The stated capacity assumes a card in each pocket, and the thicker the card, the fewer pages a binder takes before it bulges. Dragon Shield puts numbers on it for its Card Codex Zipster, which uses 18-pocket pages (9 on each side):
| Dragon Shield Card Codex Zipster | Single-sleeved | Double-sleeved |
|---|---|---|
| Regular | 20 pages, 360 cards | 18 pages, 324 cards |
| Small (8-pocket pages) | 160 cards | 144 cards |
| XL (24-pocket pages) | 24 pages, 576 cards | 18 pages, 432 cards |
Vault X gives the same kind of figure for its ring binders. Its Large Exo-Tec Ring Binder takes 50 pages of unsleeved cards (900), 45 of single-sleeved cards (810) or 35 of double-sleeved cards (630); the Slim takes 30, 25 or 20 pages (540, 450 or 360 cards). Vault X states its 9-pocket zip binder is for single- and double-sleeved cards, and BCW says its Z-Folio takes cards in soft sleeves, in deck guards or double-sleeved. Gamegenic says its 18-pocket Zip-Up Album is made for double-sleeved cards and that sleeves of other brands may change what fits.
Cards in toploaders need their own binders. Vault X's 9-Pocket Toploader Compatible Zip Binder has 14 two-sided pages with pockets of 116 by 91 mm and holds 252 cards in 35pt toploaders; its 4-pocket version holds 96. Ultra PRO's 9-Pocket Zippered TOPLOADER Premium PRO-Binder holds 180 cards in toploaders and its 4-pocket one 80.
Zip binders and ring binders
A zip binder's pages are fixed. Ultra PRO's support page says its PRO-Binders and Eclipse binders are bound like a book and cannot be added to, so the page count you buy is the page count you keep. Not every binder with a zip has fixed pages: Dragon Shield's Card Codex Zipster zips shut but holds its pages on D-lock rings.
A ring binder takes loose pages, so pages can be added, removed and reordered, which matters for a set you sort by number and fill over time. Ultra PRO's ring albums use three D-rings, and Vault X's ring binders come with three 38 mm rings (Slim) or three 67 mm rings (Large). Loose 9-pocket pages come both ways: Ultra PRO's Premium Series pages are side-loading, its Silver Series pages are top-loading, and both are punched for standard 3-ring binders. None of the manufacturer pages read for this guide says anything about cards being marked near a binder's rings, so this guide makes no claim about it either way.
How many pages a set takes
One of every card a set prints, by number, fills the page sides below. The counts are the site's catalog counts for each set, which include the secret rares numbered past the printed total and do not count reverse holo or other variant printings of the same number. A collection that keeps those variants needs more space than this table shows.
| Set (release) | Cards | 9-pocket sides | 9-pocket pages | 12-pocket sides | 12-pocket pages |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 30th Celebration (Sep 2026) | 161 | 18 | 9 | 14 | 7 |
| Ascended Heroes (Jan 2026) | 295 | 33 | 17 | 25 | 13 |
| Mega Evolution (Sep 2025) | 188 | 21 | 11 | 16 | 8 |
| Destined Rivals (May 2025) | 244 | 28 | 14 | 21 | 11 |
| Prismatic Evolutions (Jan 2025) | 180 | 20 | 10 | 15 | 8 |
| Surging Sparks (Nov 2024) | 252 | 28 | 14 | 21 | 11 |
| Paldean Fates (Jan 2024) | 245 | 28 | 14 | 21 | 11 |
| 151 (Sep 2023) | 207 | 23 | 12 | 18 | 9 |
| Paldea Evolved (Jun 2023) | 279 | 31 | 16 | 24 | 12 |
| Evolving Skies (Aug 2021) | 237 | 27 | 14 | 20 | 10 |
The arithmetic: cards divided by pockets per page gives the sides, rounded up, and half the sides, rounded up, gives the two-sided pages. Ascended Heroes, the largest set here, takes 17 of the 20 pages of a 9-pocket binder and 13 of a 12-pocket one, so each set in the table fits in one 20-page binder of either size with pages to spare, before sleeves are counted. Each set's own checklist on the site lists its cards in number order, which is the order a binder is usually filled in.

What changes and what stays
Dated figures: the capacities, page counts and pocket sizes are the manufacturers' statements as read on October 14, 2026. A manufacturer can change a product (more pages, a new pocket) under the same name, and the site keeps a record of each value with its source and the day it was read, so the guide can be checked against them later. The card counts are the catalog's on October 15, 2026; a set gains cards in the catalog only when a printing is added to it.
Lasting facts: the way capacity is counted (pockets times two sides times pages), the size of a standard card, the difference between a fixed-page zip binder and a ring binder, and the arithmetic that turns a card count into pages. Those change only if card sizes or the binders' basic design change.
Bottom line
A 20-page zip binder holds 160 cards with 4 pockets a page, 360 with 9 and 480 with 12, counting one card in each pocket on both sides of every page. Double sleeves take space: Dragon Shield's regular Zipster holds 360 single-sleeved cards and 324 double-sleeved ones. One of every card of each of ten sets from 2021 to 2026, by number, fits in one 20-page binder of either size, from 161 cards for 30th Celebration to 295 for Ascended Heroes.
